Heat Safety Tips

Dogs have unique needs when it comes to heat and cooling, so it is important to understand when a dog is experiencing heat exhaustion, and what to do. Things are already heating up in parts of the country, so we need to be aware. Here are 5 signs that your dog is overheating:

Excessive panting: Dogs cool themselves by panting. If your dog is panting a lot, they may be getting too hot. Note that this is doubly true for any flat-faced breed such as pugs or bulldogs.
Fast or irregular heartbeat: A dog's heart may try to compensate by getting the blood going to extremities.
Lethargy: Especially if your dog is having trouble with waking or standing, this is a big red flag.
Vomiting/Diarrhea: Overheating can cause gastrointestinal upset.
Collapse: If your dog collapses or has any neurological signs, this is an emergency.

If you find yourself with an overheating dog, immediately get them to a cooler area and you can wash them with cool (NOT cold) water. You can use a fan and offer water. If your dog does not cool down or they exhibit collapse or any neurological signs, it is time to get them to the emergency room as it may be more than you can treat at home. That being said, any time a dog overheats can be life threatening, so a check with your vet may be warranted.
