There's one day when all of Italy pauses — and then bursts into celebration: 15 August. Ferragosto dates back to ancient Rome, to the "Feriae Augusti", which Emperor Augustus introduced as a day of rest after the hard work of the harvest. Over the centuries, that ancient harvest thanksgiving became Italy's most joyful holiday: long lunches, fireworks over the sea, music well past midnight.
