| Dear Fellow Genealogist,
With so much emphasis in the genealogy community on historical records, it can be easy to overlook another crucial resource: your own memories.
For one thing, by reflecting on your own experiences, you might realize you know more than you thought about an ancestor or family story. For another, writing down your memories helps you “be a better ancestor” for the generations who come after you. (After all, wouldn’t you love a personal, family history-focused anecdote from your great-grandfather?)
That’s why we’re focusing today on diving into your own memories. And we consider another sort of “home source”—genealogy items you’ve received from someone else—in an article by preservation expert Denise May Levenick on how to organize inherited research, heirlooms, photos and more.
Finally, we share tips for helping with someone else’s genealogy. Sometimes by helping others, we get a clearer perspective on our own research—all while memories.
Scribbling in his journal,
— Andrew, Editor of Family Tree Magazine
