| Dear Fellow Genealogist,
When people ask what Family Tree Magazine offers that other organizations don’t, I say one of two things.
First: that we’re owned by an independent publisher. We’re not part of an Ancestry.com or MyHeritage, so we can give you unbiased reviews of these and other tools. That perspective is reflected in today’s article on some key features of Family Tree Maker 2024. (Despite having similar names, we and that software are owned by different organizations.)
Second: that, like a certain insurance agency, “We know a thing or two because we’ve seen a thing or two.” Our first issue came out in 2000. In the years since, we’ve seen online genealogy come of age, DNA testing evolve into a mainstream family history tool, and many websites come and go. That gives our writers a discerning eye for which tools and strategies are the real deal—and which don’t live up to the hype.
With that legacy in mind, I recently looked at all the brick wall-busting advice we’ve published in the past 25 years. The most-recent episode of our podcast (linked below) shares what I found: two-and-a-half decades’ worth of tips for overcoming genealogy’s toughest challenges.
