As with real estate, you might say that genealogy is about one thing: location, location, location. So much depends on when and where your ancestors lived, what records they appear in, if and how those documents survive today, and so on.
That’s why resources specific to your country or ethnic group of interest are so important. One such website, ArkivDigital, hosts records and research advice for Swedish genealogists. I interviewed a representative from ArkivDigital in the latest episode of our podcast, linked below.
Researching in a new US state can sometimes feel like researching in an entirely different country. In that spirit, we’ve included a table of known state censuses. Use it to discover if and when a territory/state took its own enumerations in addition to the federal census.
Finally, we share tips for finding US land records. Federal patents and tract books are easy enough to obtain. But other documents have historically been buried deep in archives—often, unindexed. That’s changing thanks to tools like Full-Text Search, which make them searchable for the first time.
