| The 101 Best Genealogy Websites of 2023
|
| Earlier eras of family historians were often limited by technology and record availability. But researchers today seem to have the opposite problem: too many genealogy websites, and not enough time (or money) to explore them all.
That’s why we created our first list of the 101 Best Genealogy Websites way back in 2000. The list, now in its 24th edition and headlining the July/August issue of Family Tree Magazine, rounds up the most-useful online tools and resources for your research. Entries include household names like Ancestry.com as well as smaller operations like Fulton History, sorted into helpful categories. Many are free, and most have at least some free features.

| Eighteen websites on this year’s list are new from 2022, reflecting important changes in online genealogy. New honorees the NYC Historical Vital Records Project and the Virtual Record Treasury of Ireland, for example, are both databases of long-lost records that have come online in the past year.
To celebrate the list’s release, we’re running a special contest. The selected winner will receive a prize bundle worth over $100, including a one-year membership to FamilyTreeMagazine.com, our Ultimate Genealogy Websites eBook and more. Enter here for a chance to win.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention our companion list of the 75 Best State Websites, which has also been updated. All of those US-focused websites are free to use, and many have been curated from the collections of libraries, archives and museums from around each state. That makes them valuable tools for finding local resources such as published histories and photos.
So settle in, pick a category or state, and start searching! We hope this year's list helps you make new discoveries in your family history search.
