Hey There!
Waaaaay back in 2021 (it feels like a lifetime, doesn’t it?), we launched Lindy Hop as one of our Deal of the Weeks. I’d come up with the idea for her at the end of a very long product design session with some of the last flowers left in the buckets. They were on their last legs and, if you’d asked me then (and probably still would now), I would have said the cooler pinks and warmer lavenders were a little less harmonious than I’d normally go for. But Lindy was supposed to be one of those “she’s here, then she’s gone” sort of bouquets - available for exactly one week before we moved onto the next deal, so the stakes were low. Or so we thought.
Since then, Lindy has stood the test of time in a way nothing else at Farmgirl has, reigning supreme in our top sellers list every week for 260+ weeks and counting. You guys ordered. And ordered. And ordered. And we listened. Lindy became a permanent part of our lineup.

More than a few people have asked where Lindy’s name comes from and, just like her origin, it’s not exactly a 140 characters or less sort of story. Because naming is always a big thing around here. I remember nodding off in the backseat of a rental car headed to the airport after a grower visit with two team members in front, all of us bleary-eyed, less than fresh after a few long days of work and an early wake up call for our flight home. We could have made the drive in amicable, uncaffeinated silence, but instead the driver and passenger were volleying potential names for an upcoming fall launch back and forth. The pumpkin/woolen knit/crunchy leaf puns carried us all the way to the rental return car lot, departures, and right onto the airplane. 🙂
After 16 years of similarly extended naming brainstorms, I think we’ve pulled inspiration from just about everywhere we can think of. When we launched Lindy, we were in our ballroom era. Cha Cha Cha and Tutu Tango didn’t have quite the same staying power, so Lindy lives on as a solo dancer today. Her name doesn’t make quite as much sense on her own, but it did way back when.

Funnily enough though, we don’t call her Lindy around here very often. We like to lovingly call her our Ford Taurus, instead.
I grew up in a firmly Ford family, so I know more than the average CEO about the history of Taurus’ manufacturer. Somewhere along the line I read that when Alan Mulally took over Ford, he was in disbelief that they had discontinued the Taurus - a car that had once been America’s bestseller. My family had one of them when I was growing up, and ours was just one of the millions sold. Unsurprisingly, Mullaly unretired the car.
Every time I’ve tried to redesign the Lindy, make a replacement for her, or even update the photo on our website, I think about Mullaly. Nothing I’ve made has compared, and even when I think I may have come close, you all just keep politely ignoring it and buying our Taurus instead.

I think the reason you all love her so much is because she is the ultimate all-rounder. She’s just the thing for birthdays, anniversaries, “oh shoot, I forgot”s, feel-better-soon’s, congratulations, I’m sorry’s, thank yous - and pretty much anything else life throws at you. Lindy is fun but not overly romantic, cheerful without trying too hard, and appropriate for just about anyone and anything. Basically, she’s the bouquet equivalent of the friend who effortlessly gets along with everyone at the party. We all know those people and kinda want to be those people, right? Meanwhile I’m the one waiting until I can leave so I can be home in my cozies. It figures I’d make the metaflorical life of the party.
I’d love to pretend keeping her around was part of some brilliant long-term product strategy I devised. The truth is that we planned to sell her for just seven short days, but haven’t been able to stop because you all won’t let us. So if anyone is to thank for the not-so-little-bouquet-who-could’s success - it’s all of you.
I’ll probably always keep trying to design her replacement because apparently I can’t leave well enough alone - especially at a product development session when I’m surrounded by flowers. But Lindy doesn’t need to worry -and neither do you. We’ve learned our lesson and will be keeping her around for the long haul. Unlike Ford, ironically, who seems to have discontinued the Taurus. Again. We’ll see if it stays retired this time. 😉
