Short answer: No.
These days, most cast iron manufacturers (including us!) pre-season skillets. Field's factory seasoning is expertly and evenly applied by hand to each pan we make. You can cook with a Field Skillet right out of the box—in fact, we recommend that you do!
But what if I really want to oven season my pan? It's tempting to want to speed up the seasoning process with oven seasoning (and we're not going to stop you), but 9 times out of 10 we see it doing more harm than good. The most common error is using too much oil (though it's also challenging to nail the ideal time and temp in most home ovens, which are quite variable). The result is pans that are tacky or sticky, or have thick and brittle seasoning layers that are prone to flaking.
Since seasoning through cooking produces better long-term results on smooth skillets, we only recommend oven seasoning for rehabilitating a pan that has been stripped of seasoning, typically due to damage or rust.
The best way to season is to cook often and follow the Field Method of care (steps below).
