At the very start of this year, we did some allocation of the whites from Scions of Sinai and many of you have been asking for more, so here we were. This is the last of these highly rated 2024’s as we’ve cleared out the very last available bottles with a second allocation. Top scores and awards for both grape types.

Scions of Sinai 2024s

Platter’s Guide:

Winner – Grenache Blanc of the Year 2026

97 Points - Tim Atkin MW

“This world-class Chenin Blanc from a 1978 parcel on the Sinai Hill just gets better with every vintage. Matured on lees in a 70/30 mix of concrete and foudres, it has remarkable focus and intensity, sea breeze, aniseed and juniper top notes, salty minerality and layers of hay, oyster shell and lemon zest. Bravo!”

Scions of Sinai is one of the most exciting new names in South African wine, founded by seventh-generation grower Bernhard Bredell on the rugged slopes of Sinai Hill in Stellenbosch. Farming organically and working with tiny quantities from old bush vines, Bredell crafts wines defined by purity, freshness and terroir transparency. Alongside producers such as Alheit and Lukas van Loggerenberg, Scions of Sinai is helping reshape the global perception of modern South African fine wine.

Scions of Sinai Gramadoelas Grenache Blanc 2024 is a strikingly mineral and tension-filled white from schist and slate soils in the Klein Karoo. Wholebunch pressing and gentle oak ageing preserve remarkable purity, with aromas of wildflowers, fennel and yellow plum leading into a saline, chalky palate of impressive precision. Platter’s Wine Guide named it Grenache Blanc of the Year 2026, while Neal Martin and Tim Atkin also awarded high praise.

Scions of Sinai Granietsteen Chenin Blanc 2024 is sourced from dry-farmed bush vines planted in 1978 on decomposed granite soils beside Alheit’s famed Nautical Dawn vineyard. Fermented with native yeasts and aged in concrete and old oak, the wine combines citrus peel, oyster shell and crushed stone with extraordinary focus and mineral energy. Tim Atkin awarded it 97 points, calling it a “world-class Chenin Blanc” that continues to improve each vintage.

What impressed us most was the remarkable sense of purity and energy running through both wines. These are not heavy, overworked whites, but precise, terroir-driven wines built on freshness, texture and mineral tension.

Tiny production and rising international demand mean these allocations are unlikely to last long.

“Winemaker and Bordeaux lover Bernhard Bredell is a vanguard for the new wave of Stellenbosch producers alongside the likes of Lukas van Loggerenberg and Kaapzicht’s Danie Steytler. Under his slightly difficult-to-pronounce Scions of Sinai label his roster of wines exploits some of the most propitious sites in a style far removed from the ponderous over-oaked/overripe wines of old. 96 Points | Platter’s Wine Guide, Malu Lambert

Winner – Grenache Blanc of the Year 2026. Truly remarkable, wildflower-scented grenache blanc on Klein Karoo schist & slate. Thrilling steeliness the hallmark of 2024, intensified by chalky bone-dryness. Majority wholebunch, plus 9 months large oak deliver an intensity that realises the promise of 2023.

94 Points | Vinous, Neal Martin

From the Klein Karoo, the 2024 Gramadoelas, pure Grenache Blanc is partially whole cluster pressed and aged for nine months in 400-litre barrels. This has a finely-tuned yet understated bouquet with hints of fennel, chai and yellow plum, so discreet but it unfolds in the glass. The palate is very well balanced with a keen line of acidity, fresh and quite saline, with a very slight flor-like nuttiness that lends complexity on the finish. Superb.

94 Points | Tim Atkin MW

"Very dry - like Priorat" is how Bernhard Bredell describes the terroir of the Klein Karoo, where this Grenache Blanc is planted at 460 metres on shale and schist soils. Stony, tangy and intense, it has scalpel-like acidity, layers of lime, petrichor and white flowers and a bone-dry, palate-cleansing finish. 2027-31

"I don't want it to be a collectors' wine," says Bernhard Bredell, but I fear his wish may not come true. This world-class Chenin Blanc from a 1978 parcel on the Sinai Hill just gets better with every vintage. Matured on lees in a 70/30 mix of concrete and foudres, it has remarkable focus and intensity, sea breeze, aniseed and juniper top notes, salty minerality and layers of hay, oyster shell and lemon zest. Bravo! 2027-35

93 Points | Vinous, Neal Martin

The 2024 Granietsteen is 100% Chenin Blanc, dry-farmed bush vines planted in 1978, mostly whole cluster pressed with ten months on the fine lees in foudres and concrete vats. This has a complex nose with almond, walnut and light smoky scents, hints of orange pith surfacing with aeration. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity. Plenty of tension, quite animated with a touch of white pepper towards the finish, this has a little more vibrancy than the Gramadoelas with long sustain on the finish that urges you back for more. Excellent.
