We offered the reds yesterday, which are made by Pierro, but the whites are crafted entirely by Jean-Marc Roulot.

Best known for producing some of Burgundy’s finest Chardonnay in Meursault, Roulot is now applying that same precision and philosophy in Patagonia, and the results are seriously impressive. These are whites that deserve real attention.

If you were served these blind, you might guess they were white Burgundy, with a nose carrying the unmistakable Roulot signature of citrus oil, white flowers and flinty reduction. More importantly, they share that same mineral-driven, linear style that prioritises precision and tension over richness.

If you haven’t tried the wines before, the Mainqué 2025 comes very strongly recommended.

Last vintage, Suckling awarded the 2024 Mainqué as the #1 Wine from Argentina in 2025. A nice article on it can be found here

Founded by Piero Incisa della Rocchetta (Sassicaia Family) in 2004, Bodega Chacra is a remarkable Patagonian estate dedicated to biodynamic viticulture and purity of expression. Nestled in Río Negro, it cultivates Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from old, ungrafted vines planted in the 1930s. With a commitment to sustainability and minimal intervention, Chacra wines are transparent reflections of place. The wines combine Burgundian finesse with Argentine vitality, offering a unique taste of South America’s southern frontier.

Chacra’s Chardonnays are crafted in partnership with Jean-Marc Roulot, one of Burgundy’s most revered winemakers. While Piero Incisa della Rocchetta takes the lead on Pinot Noir, Roulot has complete creative freedom on the Chardonnay.

Sourced from Gualtallary’s high-altitude, calcareous soils, the wine is whole-bunch pressed, fermented with indigenous yeasts, and matured in seasoned oak. Roulot uses between 10-20% new oak depending on the vintage and cuvee, resulting in a wine of remarkable purity, tension, and mineral-driven finesse.

We’ve been buying these wines for a few years now and strongly endorse how well they age. Last week we tasted the 2025 alongside the 2022s. The wines were showing beautifully and will age incredibly well for another decade.

‘Chacra’ Chardonnay

The ‘Chacra’ Chardonnay is the flagship white of the range, precise, layered and deeply mineral. Aged in large-format barrels and concrete, it combines citrus purity with saline tension and refined texture. Think Puligny with Patagonian clarity: bright, structured and built to age. In Previous vintages, James Suckling wrote, “probably the finest answer to Puligny or Meursault in Argentina... all about texture and purity. Also intellectual.” With Roulot’s Pulignys now exceeding €350 per bottle, this is a rare chance to enjoy world-class Chardonnay at a fraction of the price of his Burgundy domaine.

Mainqué Chardonnay

The Mainqué Chardonnay offers a vibrant and expressive style, blending Roulot’s finesse with Patagonia’s sun-kissed fruit. Aged partly in stainless steel, it’s fresher and more immediate than ‘Chacra’ with notes of lemon zest, orchard fruit and gentle toast. Lively, textured and irresistibly drinkable, it delivers immense quality at a more approachable price. In 2024, Suckling put this as his best Argentinian wine of the year

Wow. This is really complex, with sliced apples, lemons, flint, stones and a hint of limes on the nose. It’s floral and aromatic with white flowers. Long, long finish. Complex and thoughtful. Drink or hold.
