$181 Million for a Pollock. Is the Art Market Sending Signals?

Christie's held its evening sale on May 18. The headline grabber was a $181 million Jackson Pollock — the fourth highest price ever at auction.

A Rothko also went for $95.4M. A Brancusi fetched $107.6M (second highest ever for sculpture).

Those masterpieces were obvious outliers, but by the time the gavel fell on the last lot, $1.1B in art had been sold.

Pollock died in 1956. The number of museum-quality paintings he left behind is limited. Same for Rothko, Warhol, Basquiat. When one of these works trades at the top of the market, the remaining supply gets a little thinner and more contested.

That scarcity is what Masterworks was largely built around. Their acquisition committee — former specialists from Sotheby's and Christie's — uses over 3 million data points to identify what in the market is worth buying into.

The same thing happens with price. Price would often run and rally to a certain direction. As price moves farther from the average price, traders, brokers and other market participants would start to see that price is either too expensive or too cheap. It then forces price back to the mean. This is called Mean Reversal.

The Relative Strength Index (RSI) is an oscillating technical indicator which observes for momentum based on price changes. It is plotted as an oscillating indicator ranging from 0 to 100. As a bounded indicator, the RSI can identify trend bias as well as an overextension of price, whether overbought or oversold.

This trading strategy on its own is already a viable trading strategy that could produce good gains on many of its trades. Compared to most trend reversal strategies, this strategy has a relatively high win probability.
