Hey there!
Confession: I used to believe that "natural" automatically meant "gentler" and "synthetic" automatically meant "skip it." It's such a tidy little story, isn't it? Plants = good, lab = bad. Done.
Except… what I have learned working in the industry for 20+ years is that the science doesn't back that up. So I think it is past time we set the record straight and debunk some natural vs. synthetic fragrance myths.
Myth #1: Natural fragrance is always gentler on skin
Here is the thing about marketing jargon and selling points: they work best when they make logical sense. Fragrances derived from nature must be better for us, right?
Here’s the plot twist — essential oils are actually one of the biggest sources of fragrance allergy. Up to 4.5% of adults are allergic to fragrance materials, and that number jumps way higher among people with sensitive skin who get patch-tested.
Nature is wonderful — but "natural" doesn't mean "automatically harmless." This makes sense - think of the things people are allergic to: poison ivy, grass and weed pollens are all "natural" items.
Myth #2: Synthetic fragrance is always harsh or harmful
Nope — and here's where it gets interesting. Many synthetics are single, clean, well-defined molecules, which means formulators can control quality batch to batch far more tightly than with a plant extract (whose makeup shifts with the season, the soil, and how it was stored).
Sometimes synthetics are even the kinder environmental choice. One study found that extracting a single scent molecule from mint had roughly 100x the environmental footprint of making it synthetically — because the plant contained only trace amounts, so it took mountains of biomass to get a tiny bit. 🌍
So what actually matters?
Not the "natural vs. synthetic" label. What matters is the real stuff:
Both natural and synthetic fragrances can be beautiful, well-tolerated, or problematic. The honest answer is: it depends on the molecule, not the marketing. 💛
Your tiny challenge this week:
Flip over one product you use daily and actually read the fragrance story behind it. Not to panic — just to get curious. Is it transparent about what's inside? That single question tells you more than the word "natural" ever could.
This is exactly why we obsess over clean ingredients - no SLS, no dyes, no parabens, no phthalates, and nothing we wouldn't put on our own skin.
Take care of yourself this weekend. You deserve it
