We have more in-stock updates for new and refurbished Framework Laptop DIY Edition (11th Gen Intel® Core™). We produced additional (and possibly final) refurbished 11th Gen DIY Edition laptops at our service center, and all three CPU configurations are now available. Unlike the new 12th Gen and excess 11th Gen units that ship from our warehouse in Taiwan, these refurbished systems ship to the US and Canada from New Jersey.
Most of our inventory worldwide is at our distribution center in Taiwan. We watch ordering trends and manufacture to keep enough inventory buffered to be able to ship products quickly while avoiding having excess. Forecasting is a delicate balancing act due to how long production lead times are:
- Planning for manufacturing starts up to a year ahead of shipments, with placement of orders for very long lead time components like power ICs and microcontrollers.
- Major high-value components like CPUs and modules like the battery, keyboard, and webcam come next with ordering deadlines a few months prior to production. CPUs and keyboards are especially critical, as we have to predict both the quantity we need and the mix between the different versions (processor models and keyboard languages).
- The next deadlines after that are the production quantities for assembly of modules like Mainboards and Input Covers at our manufacturing partner Compal 1-2 months prior to shipment.
- The final step is submitting the final laptop assembly orders a few weeks prior to shipment.
The trick to all of this, of course, is optimizing forecasts to be a very close match to both the quantities and configurations of the orders that end up being placed. Towards the end of Framework Laptop (11th Gen Intel® Core™) manufacturing, we built a few too many units with German and French keyboards and have some quantity remaining in Taiwan. Today, we’re making these 11th Gen DIY Edition units available in the US and Canada (where we sold out of US English 11th Gen systems long ago). We’ve further discounted the pricing to start at $640 in the US, which is $39 lower than US English systems were. $39 is exactly the price of our US English Keyboard, so you can add one to your laptop order and follow the guide to install it, pick up a clear or blank keyboard, or choose to keep the non-US keyboard and learn a new language instead!
