A classic dungeon crawler adventure, reimagined This week GameClub has a very special Android release that (technically) has been in the works since 1982. It’s Sword of Fargoal, and it is credited among the games responsible for the invention of the entire roguelike genre! And it's on Android for the first time ever.
Originally published on the VIC-20 and Commodore 64 in the 80s, this new version of Sword of Fargoal was rewritten from the ground up to make it a modern retro game — all the fundamentals are there, with the visuals tastefully spruced everywhere that is appropriate.
If you’ve never played a roguelike before, Sword of Fargoal is a great starting point. In these games, everything is random, so no two games will ever be the same. The enemies you come across, the loot you collect, and the layout of the dungeons itself are all unique to every run. This leads the player down a path of mastering the basic strategies of survival, then applying those techniques to overcome whatever challenge the game happens to throw at you this time. You’ll die a lot, but each death is an opportunity to learn how to not die that way again (or at minimum avoid that type of death).
