France halts iPhone 12 sales over radiation exposure levels

Wow…. This is just in: Apple must stop selling its iPhone 12 model in France due to above-threshold radiation levels.  

France's radiation watchdog ANFR decided to ban iPhone 12 sales after it had carried out tests which showed the smartphone's Specific Absorption Rate (SAR)  – a measure of the rate of radio frequency energy absorbed by the body from a piece of equipment – was higher than legally allowed. 

The watchdog said it had found the phone’s specific absorption rate was 5.74 watts per kilogram during tests simulating the phone being held in the hand or kept in a pocket. The EU standard for SAR is 4.0 watts per kilogram in such tests.

This comes on the heels of a Chicago Tribune investigation which revealed most popular cell phones models were emitting up to 5 times the legal limit… A limit that is already outdated and using deceptive, and unrepresentative test methods:

“FCC regulations for phone testing were first set in 1996 when a gallon of gasoline cost $1.25 and the average cellphone cost a staggering $2,000, which equals roughly $3,200 today after adjusting for inflation. These expensive phones were used chiefly for business, medical and military purposes, with a typical call duration of six minutes.”

Needless to say, our exposure is much higher today, and regulations have failed to follow.

The French agency will now pass on its findings to regulators in other EU member states, which “could have a snowball effect”. While it is crazy to think that regulatory agencies are still slow to move despite scientific studies showing an increase in the risk of some forms of cancer (!!), this move will hopefully lead to more scrutiny and hopefully more awereness on this issue.

Whether you own an iPhone 12 or another model of phone, consider taking the following steps to reduce your exposure:

• Keep your phone away from your pockets when at home or at work
• Turn off your phone at night or put it in airplane mode
• Use wired headphones
