A new survey found that 29% of employees admit to actively sabotaging their company’s AI strategy—from refusing to use mandated tools to deliberately generating low-quality output to make AI look less effective. Among Gen Z workers, that number jumps to 44%. And another global survey found that a whopping 80% of white-collar workers are either avoiding or actively rejecting their company’s AI tools, as reported by Fortune.

In a situation where so many workers feel powerless, it’s not hard to understand why rejection—or even sabotage—starts to feel like the next best option when you’re being basically threatened with “adapt or lose your job.” That’s not exactly the kind of warm and fuzzy energy that inspires trust. 🙄

For a lot of people—women especially—this pushback against AI isn’t about being scared, behind, or unable to “keep up.” Please. It’s a conscious, moral decision to opt out of AI entirely because of how (and why) this technology is being built and used. Many workers have very legitimate concerns about privacy, bias, job security, surveillance, ethics, and the environmental cost of powering all this new tech.

Case in point: A recent Gallup poll found that Americans overwhelmingly oppose new AI data centers, with women expressing stronger opposition than men—concerns tied to water use, energy consumption, pollution, rising utility costs, and the impact on already overburdened communities.

So until companies stop treating AI resistance like a skills gap when it’s really a trust gap, employees are going to keep finding their own ways to protect themselves—and their jobs.
