Victoria here, Girlboss’ executive editor. 👋 |
I—like so many women—am allergic to bragging about myself. I’d rather let my work “speak for itself,” but the truth is, your boss can’t read your mind or see every single thing you do during the workday. Sharing your wins is essential, especially when your performance review is coming up. Here’s how to show up prepared—and lay the groundwork for that well-deserved promotion or raise. 🚀🪜 |
Other stuff the Girlboss team is yapping about on Slack: |

How to Prep for Your First Big Performance Review |
The dilemma: “My annual review is next month, and I have no idea how to prepare! This is my first big girl job, and I've never had a serious review before.” |
The expert: Emily Durham, a.k.a. Emily The Recruiter, a career and confidence coach, podcaster, and content creator with nearly 2M followers across Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. Her new book, Clock In: No BS Advice For Getting Ahead In Your Career (Without Losing Your Mind), is out now. |
What most people don’t know is that by the time you have your performance review conversation with your boss, your performance rating and any associated raises or next steps are already determined. Usually, your boss needs to submit your performance rating at least one month before your conversation. |
That is why it’s so important to proactively share your wins with your boss in your weekly 1-on-1s, so your great work always stays top of mind. To prepare for this conversation itself: |
|
📂 Step One: Collect your wins list. Before your meeting, go through your emails and Teams messages to collect any positive feedback. Add all of these into a big, beautiful document that we lovingly call a “Wins List.” |
🧠 Step Two: Mentally prepare for the conversation. Your boss will be sharing your accomplishments and also areas for growth. Be prepared to say thank you when complimented and take constructive feedback. Trust me, no one likes getting negative feedback at work, but it really is an amazing opportunity to see where we can improve to get to the next level. When faced with areas of opportunity, say thank you and don’t beat yourself up! |
🏆 Step Three: After listening to your boss’ feedback on your performance, this is your chance to share your wins list and make a plan. Share your wins with your boss, followed by your career goals. Maybe that is a raise or promotion. Most importantly, ask your boss if you can co-create a plan to help you get there based on the feedback. This critical step is what separates those who grow from those who don’t. |
📈 Step Four: Develop a growth plan with your boss. This can include mentorship, stretch opportunities, or more education. This plan helps ensure your boss is actively bought into your growth, so you can check in monthly to see if you’re on track. |
Good luck! You are going to crush it! 💪 |

💖 Get in, loser, we’re going back to the early 2000s. The Juicy Couture x Sporty & Rich collab drops today at 9 a.m. PT / 12 p.m. ET, and the bedazzled velour tracksuits are perfect for getting stopped by the paparazzi on your way to brunch with Paris Hilton. |
🧘♀️ Social Media Manager Cheska has been testing Lemme Relax Soft Chews and is officially a fan. They taste super yummy and have become her go-to little nighttime ritual for winding down—especially as a chronic overthinker. |
🗂️ Networking is all digital now, but a good business card just hits different. GotPrint makes fully customizable cards for founders, freelancers, and side hustlers ready to look legit.* |
🕶️ Your airport outfit just got a hell of a lot chicer. Luggage brand Monos has expanded into sunglasses, with six unisex frames inspired by natural landscapes and the clean lines of architecture. Imagine how cool you’d look wearing these rectangular frames in the TSA line?! |
☀️ Executive Editor Victoria has tried dozens of facial sunscreens, and ILIA’s new tinted mineral SPF 50 might be the best one yet. It has a serum-like consistency that blends gorgeously into the skin and leaves a hydrated, glowy finish—perfect for no-makeup days. |
