Victoria here, Girlboss’ executive editor. 👋 |
I used to blast Jordin Sparks’ “One Step at a Time” on my iPod Shuffle as a tween, and the song’s ethos comes in clutch for mapping out your career, too. Today’s Real Talk Tuesday is with a director of communications who is gently reminding us all to stop planning the next 40 years of our careers and just focus on the next best move instead. |

⚾ What does being ambitious mean to you? |
“Knowing that I might fail and swinging for the fences anyway. Not to lean in too hard on the sports analogies, but you can’t win if you don’t play, and I’d rather lose a hundred times going all in on that big, audacious goal than to let the fear of failure keep me from even trying. Worst-case scenario, I don’t get what I wanted. At least I’ll know I was brave enough to try.” |
🛣️ What’s something you’d tell your younger self just starting in their career? |
“You don’t have to make the perfect move; you just have to make the next best move. Early in my career, I spent a lot of time worrying about how every decision I made—university, co-op placements, first job, leaving one role for another—would shape my entire career trajectory. I was 22 and trying to make decisions for a version of myself 10, 20, 40 years in the future. But success isn’t linear, and nothing is permanent. Try new things, follow passions, build your network, figure out what you like (and what you don’t like). If you end up not enjoying the step you took, take a different one, and then another one after that.” |
🙅♀️ What’s a skill you wish you’d built sooner? |
“Someone very wise once advised me not to be flattered into doing something that wasn’t right for me. Being asked to join a board or being headhunted for a role can be extremely validating—we’re only human!—but it has to work for you, too. I’ve said no to opportunities that sounded great but didn’t align with my values, my capacity, or my interests at the time. I don’t know for sure what would have come of those opportunities if I’d said yes, but I do know that I found a lot more clarity when I removed ‘because it felt good to be asked’ from my decision matrix.” |
✍️ What’s an underrated productivity hack? |
“Write it down so it’s not in your head. Your computer doesn’t work as well when you’ve left 100 tabs open, and neither do you. If you write it down, you don’t have to remember it, and you can free up that big brain of yours for high-value thinking instead of mentally running through your to-do list or your talking points on repeat so you don’t forget anything. Create systems for your inbox, your notebook, and your files, and then use them. Smarter, not harder, team.” |
✋ Best career advice you’ve ever received?
“Put your hand up. Demonstrating genuine interest in the job and enthusiasm to provide value will get you further in your career than any fancy degree, natural gift, or insatiable work ethic ever will. Offer to help with the new project or ask to shadow a colleague on an initiative you haven’t previously supported. Soak up every opportunity to learn and then put your hand up to put it into practice.” |
