Victoria here, Girlboss’ executive editor. 👋 |
One of the things I love most about our Real Talk Tuesday series is getting to hear how different women define ambition for themselves. This week’s guest talks about what it means to build a career rooted in community and impact—not just external validation and milestones. Plus, the sweet moment she realized she’d “made it.” Grab the tissues. 🥹 |

💼 Job of the day: Starface—a.k.a. the cute star-shaped pimple patches you’ve seen all over TikTok—is hiring a fully remote Junior Copywriter, Social + Community. You must be chronically online, naturally funny, a strong decision-maker, and excited to yap in the comments. How fun! |

🚀What does being ambitious mean to you? |
“Going after a goal you strongly believe in or feel passionate about, even in the face of obstacles, without compromising your values or needing to diminish others to get there.” |
🪞 What’s something you got wrong about success early on? |
“I used to base my success on external validations and milestones. However, I soon realized that this idea of success wasn’t sustainable—I was constantly pushing for more and not celebrating the wins as they happened. While I don’t think this is a concept I will ever fully be able to let go of, I’ve found more fulfillment in viewing success as being aligned with my values while creating meaningful impact, not just for me, but for the communities I’m part of.” |
🧭 Who shaped how you think about your career—and why? |
“One of my first managing editors, Lisa Yeung, really helped shape how I look at inclusivity in my work. While I was a Style Editor at HuffPost Canada, she really taught and encouraged me to look beyond what was just being included in mainstream media and to think outside of the box. This has definitely informed and shaped a lot of the work I do now, and I’m so thankful to have had her as a wonderful mentor early on in my career.” |
🥹 What’s the moment you thought to yourself, “I made it?” |
“The first time my dad actually endorsed an article I wrote to our entire family! My dad is definitely the typical Chinese dad who would pull the ‘Only an A? Why not an A+?’ when I was growing up (he still does that now… but when it comes to follower counts on social). But I remember I sent him an article I wrote once, and he shared it with the entire family, saying it was a ‘must-read.’ I don’t think I’ve ever felt more proud!” |
🙅♀️ What did you have to say no to to get where you are? |
“People-pleasing! It is something that has been deeply embedded in me for the majority of my life, but as I’ve gotten older and more advanced in my career, I realized that you’ll never make everyone happy—what matters most is that you feel good and aligned in the decisions that you make.” |

What Team Girlboss has been loving lately. |
|
👗 How darling is this embroidered mini dress from Abercrombie? It’s giving Euro summer without requiring an actual plane ticket. Contributing Writer Lara has it in her cart rn. |
📇 GotPrint makes the little brand details—business cards, stickers, thank-you notes—feel much more official than “I’ll DM you my info later.”* |
❤️🩹 Niall Horan’s new single “End of an Era” pays tribute to his late One Direction bandmate Liam Payne, and we’re in our feelings about it. |
🔌 Social Media Manager Cheska is obsessed with these smart plugs. They connect to Alexa and Google Home, so she can control her lamps, humidifier, and other devices with a voice command instead of switching everything on one by one. Genius! |
🐱 Cheska has also been loving Lemme Purr after dealing with a little “down there” drama last month. After taking medication, she added these gummies to her routine and felt like they helped get her pH balance back on track. |
