Victoria here, Girlboss’ executive editor. 👋 |
Last time I checked, I wasn’t a mindreader. 🔮 (Well, sometimes I’d like to think I am.) But the way some managers (don’t) communicate, you’d think employees were supposed to know what they want at all times. Insert that “What do you want?” scene from The Notebook. |
According to new research, that kind of workplace ambiguity isn’t just a royal pain in the ass—it can seriously hurt employee performance, too. More on that below! |

POV: Trying to Get ✨Aligned✨ With Your Boss
|
Let’s play a fun little game of Would You Rather: Work Stressors Edition. Level: Impossible. |
Would you rather: |
a) Have so much work on your plate that you’re burned out 🔥 b) Consistently get conflicting feedback that your projects never get finished 😵💫 c) Never have clear expectations or measures for success for your job 🤔 |
Turns out, there’s one that hurts employee performance the most. |
Any guesses? Lock it in! |
|
A new analysis published in the Journal of Vocational Behavior reviewed 515 studies spanning six decades and nearly 800,000 workers, and found that role ambiguity—unclear expectations around responsibilities and performance—was the most damaging stressor overall, as reported by Allwork.Space. Yup, even more than workload! 🤯 |
Role ambiguity doesn’t just hurt productivity. It was also tied to lower job satisfaction, weaker commitment to the organization, and less discretionary effort, according to the analysis. Translation: When people don’t know what’s expected of them, they’re less likely to feel engaged, invested, or motivated to go above and beyond. And why would you?! |
So, if you’re a manager reading this, reducing your employees’ workload is a great first step. But radical clarity is the real key. 🔑 Your team needs to know—at all times—what’s a priority, who owns what, and what “success” actually looks like. |
Because this isn’t an episode of The Traitors. 🧩 It’s corporate America. Tell people the mission. |

What Team Girlboss has been loving lately. |

🪩 Reformation teamed up with New York-based style influencer and mom of four Courtney Grow on an 18-piece collection that makes getting dressed feel a little more fun. Think linen dresses, bold bikinis, breezy separates, and shimmering gowns. |
👏 Menopause support at work is long overdue. Hone Health’s Menopause Time Off Movement is calling on employers to recognize menopause as a real workplace issue. About damn time.* |
💨 Dyson just launched its first portable cooling fan. At $99.99, it’s not exactly cheap, but its “fast evaporative cooling” technology will come in clutch for beating the heat this summer. Plus, there are a bunch of cute colors. |
🛍️ Content Marketing Manager Kamela has been loving @things.i.bought.and.liked, where this creator shares the products she buys and genuinely loves. She doesn’t take sponsored deals, which makes every recommendation feel even more dangerous… |
🍋 When life gives you fresh mint in your garden, you make… mint lemonade! Executive Editor Victoria tested out this easy recipe from Queen Martha Stewart over the weekend, and it was perfectly tart and not too sweet. |
