Why Is #CareerTok Up in Arms Over Iced Coffee? 🧋

Picture this: you've got an interview at 2 p.m., and beforehand you swing by your favorite coffee shop for an iced oat milk latte to calm your nerves. You walk in, sit down, and set your drink beside you. Harmless, right? 

Not according to the internet.

It all started when veteran recruiter @caitlinrecruiter posted a viral TikTok claiming Gen-Z candidates are showing up to interviews with iced coffees, which she says reads as unprofessional.

“When you show up with an iced coffee or an iced latte, it says that the interview is just a stop on your list of errands for the day,” she said in the TikTok. “It looks like you went to Target, you went to Starbucks, now you’re stopping by for your interview, and then you’re on to the next thing. It looks a little too casual to me.”

Most business professionals online agreed—it's loud and disruptive (especially if you're swirling the ice around), and if you're shaking the hiring manager's hand with a wet hand from the drink's condensation? Not a great first impression.

But some Gen-Z job seekers are not having it, arguing the criticism misses the point entirely. LinkedIn user Albanery Badia pointed out that after surviving ATS systems, AI screening, and endless interview rounds, being judged over "a $6 iced coffee" felt a little unhinged.

Forbes contributor Colleen Batchelder, who works with Gen-Z job seekers, agrees the whole thing is a bit of a red herring. "This debate is not about the beverage," she wrote. "Hiring managers are not disappointed in you because you chose iced coffee instead of hot chocolate….They're judging your ability to be fully present, prepared, and respectful of their time during your interview slot."

And, as TikTok user @anacmichelle1 pointed out, "a lot of white people are saying this is ridiculous," while people of color are more likely to say, "we wouldn't even think about showing up with an iced coffee because it's tacky, it's unprofessional." She argues that people of color already have to "prove ourselves twice as much as the next white person"—how they dress, talk, show up—so acting like this debate is silly and beneath you is, as she put it, "a very privileged take." 

Playing it safe at work isn't about being uptight. For a lot of people, it's a means of survival.
