LinkedIn Is Apparently a Dating App Now?!

How does that Rihanna song go? “We found love in a hopeless place.” Well, it’s true. Singles are finding the loves of their lives (or their latest mustached, tattooed, mullet-sporting hookup of the month) in unconventional places like Strava, Yelp, and Duolingo.

But today, we’re focusing on the most out-of-pocket app for finding love: LinkedIn. Yes, the place where you'll see a post about a C-suite exec proposing to his girlfriend and somehow making it about B2B sales. 🙄

A survey from resume platform Zety found that about a quarter of professionals think using LinkedIn to find dates is fair game, and 22% admit to reaching out (or even responding) to someone romantically on the platform. The catch: 65% also believe doing this could seriously damage their professional reputation—but that hasn't stopped 1 in 8 people from forming a romantic relationship that started on the networking platform.

According to The Wall Street Journal, LinkedIn's own guidelines technically forbid romantic advances, but that hasn't stopped people from using it exactly that way. 

One woman got engaged to a man who'd matched with her on Tinder, then followed up with a LinkedIn connection request instead of a dating app message—she now calls him the best connection she's ever made (pun very much intended). Another couple's love story started because she messaged him to recruit for a job opening. He turned her down, but months later spotted her on Plenty of Fish, and this time he messaged her back on LinkedIn with his phone number instead. They're now what she describes as a "boss couple."

And look, I get it. I recently redownloaded Hinge and Bumble (please pray for me at this time), and I’m already feeling the swiping fatigue. As an ambitious woman who takes pride in her career, I wouldn’t mind someone sliding into my dry AF LinkedIn DMs.

While I've never sent an outright suggestive LinkedIn DM to a hottie with a good headshot, I have sent connection requests hoping they'd pick up on my (almost undetectable) hint that I was making a move—or perked up a little too much when an attractive person sent me one first. But unfortunately, dear reader, nothing has come of it yet.

Just be warned: LinkedIn notifies people when you've viewed their profile, so your “background check” isn't nearly as sneaky as you might think—unless you know the workaround. Head to your profile picture > Settings & Privacy > Visibility > Profile viewing options, and switch to "Private mode." Boom, you're now an "Anonymous LinkedIn Member," free to stalk in peace.
