Eczema vs Psoriasis: How to tell the difference. There’s a reason people mix up eczema and psoriasis—they’re both inflammatory skin conditions that make you itch. But each condition has its own causes, complexities, and treatments. Here’s how to tell them apart. Learn more.
They look different. Eczema patches can be red, brown, or gray, with skin that’s dry, cracked, bumpy and weepy. Psoriasis is thicker, scalier, and has more distinct boundaries. The itch is different. Eczema and psoriasis both cause itch, but eczema itch tends to be more intense. With psoriasis, itch is often milder and can be accompanied by a burning sensation.
They have different causes. Narrowing down the cause of eczema is tricky—genetics, environment, inflammation, and the immune system all play a role. Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease that causes rapid skin cell growth. Not sure? See your doctor. If you have inflamed, itchy skin and you’re not sure why, it’s time to book an appointment with your doctor. They can offer a formal diagnosis and discuss treatment options.
