Heatwaves are increasing in both frequency and temperature as a result of climate change, and in those sweltering moments, it can be hard to think of what to wear beyond the thing that’s going to keep you coolest, never mind whether it’s sustainable or ethical. 

Our tips? Opt for lighter clothing made from lower-impact materials such as organic linen or hemp, or recycled cotton, which are all breathable. If you’re planning to exercise, eschew fossil-fuel-derived synthetics in favour of alternatives like bamboo viscose and TENCEL Lyocell, which dry quickly. Don’t forget a hat to shield yourself from the sun, and opt for sunscreen from a brand rated highly for its transparency around ingredients.
