Last week, Paris department store BHV announced it was ending its controversial partnership with ultra fast fashion brand SHEIN, describing it as a mistake: something many Parisians and industry folk could’ve told the store from the outset. 

Reuters reports that other brands with a presence in the department store had quit as a result of BHV’s link-up with SHEIN. And even fans of the ultra fast fashion brand were disappointed with its offering in the store, noting that prices were much higher than the rock-bottom costs on its online platform. Costs being higher for bricks-and-mortar retail makes sense, since there are more overheads to account for, but the fans’ surprise speaks to the unrealistic pricing expectations that the ultra fast fashion industry is creating for consumers. 

After all, can it really be possible to sell dresses for as little as $5 without exploiting people, the planet, and animals in the process? The answer is no. There is a cost to paying workers a living wage, sourcing responsibly produced fabrics, and designing for circularity. But affordability is a spectrum. And while you can certainly expect to pay higher prices for more sustainable clothing (which will probably last longer anyway), there are still better brands catering to those with a smaller budget. Today, we’re sharing some alternatives to SHEIN doing just that.

SHEIN has published some vague sustainability information on its website in the last few years and recently acquired Everlane (a brand that has long claimed responsible business as its founding mission). This is perhaps SHEIN’s attempt to appear to be taking some action to improve its sustainability credentials. But the reality is that it gets our lowest rating of “We Avoid” for its treatment of people, the planet, and animals. To that end, here are four better options with prices on the lower end of the scale. 
  • Honest Basics (“Good”) is a German label making more affordable, GOTS certified basic clothes.
  • UK-based Yes Friends (“Great”) uses a larger production and direct-to-consumer model to keep prices for its more sustainable clothes affordable.
  • In manufacturing its stylish ready-to-wear, Jyoti Fair Works (“Good”) provides employment for people from marginalised or disadvantaged groups in India.
  • CHNGE (“Good”) is a US-based brand that ought to be your go-to for making a statement
