Hi there,

Paris Fashion Week kicks off on Wednesday and as ever, we’re curious to see how sustainability shows up on the agenda. Not least because France has been a leader in the push against ultra fast fashion and overconsumption recently.

The region introduced a bill to ban companies from destroying unsold clothes and cosmetics way back in 2019, and just last year it brought legislation to curtail ultra fast fashion advertising, introduce an eco-tax on garments from such brands, and mandate environmental disclosures.

This week, we’re sharing some brands from the region that are helping to set better standards for the industry. And in case you were wondering, SĂ©zane—the region’s Instagram-favourite with 5.6m followers—isn’t one of them. Its rating is “Not Good Enough”, so in this issue, we’ve also found some alternatives for you to consider.

In this week’s issue:
  • Meet France’s more sustainable brands: including chic tailoring, made-to-measure, and lasting footwear
  • Top-rated alternatives to SĂ©zane: because the brand rates “Not Good Enough”
  • Offers on stylish essentials: from independently-rated “Good” and “Great” brands
If you live in France, you might be wondering which fashion brands are the most ethical according to the information they disclose about their practices. Scroll to discover four of those that rate “Good” or “Great” against our methodology, then click through to meet the rest.
  • Facettes Studio (“Good”) is a Parisian tailoring brand that uses upcycled materials and has banned polyester and polyamide from its collections.
  • COG (“Good”) is a footwear label that creates more sustainable, vegan shoes from recycled materials, including natural corks, used cotton scraps, and end-of-life rubber.
  • Dressarte Paris (“Good”) makes clothes to order, and you can choose from existing sizes or enter your own measurements.
  • Veja (“Good”) designs fair trade sneakers that are loved by the fashion community.

French brand SĂ©zane has won fans with its dreamy Parisian lifestyle inspiration, influencer champions, and signatures like trench coats, basket bags, and blouses. But it rates “Not Good Enough” against our methodology.

Despite the brand using some lower impact materials, designing for longevity, and implementing an animal welfare policy, there is no evidence that SĂ©zane ensures workers in its supply chain are paid a living wage, nor that it’s working to reduce hazardous chemicals in manufacturing, or protect biodiversity in its supply chain. Here are some alternative brands with higher ratings:
  • Thinking MU’s (“Good”) cool men’s and womenswear reflects its native city of Barcelona — fun, fresh, and with splashes of colour.
  • “Great”-rated E.L.V. Denim is known for transforming old denim into stylish two-tone jeans, and has recently branched out into ready-to-wear.
  • Komodo’s (“Good”) clothes are the kind you could wear to an art gallery, a chilled office, or to the pub.
  • As its name suggests, LA Relaxed (“Great”) makes cool clothes in Los Angeles for casual occasions.

Essentials are the core of most wardrobes and often sit close to your skin, so you’ll want to make sure the quality and sustainability of such items is there. Brands like Mila.Vert, No Nasties, and Wild Clouds, all featured in this week’s Offers, make reliable basics out of lower-impact materials like organic cotton and linen—think trousers, tees, knit dresses and shirts. Oh, and they’re all beautifully cut and designed, too.
