Hi there,

Congratulations on making it through January. The start of the year is when Big Fashion typically pushes shoppers to embrace a “new you” by setting out self-improvement plans, exercise regimes, and buying lots of new stuff, including activewear. Unfortunately these garments are often made cheaply from synthetics like polyester, which sheds microplastics, doesn’t biodegrade, and harbours odours—not ideal for that upcoming hot yoga class.

Our rebuttal to all this? First off, a message that if you’re feeling this new year, new me energy, be sure to check in with yourself and ask whether any new initiatives are based on your wellbeing and self-acceptance, rather than the pressure to conform to fashion’s unrealistic lifestyles and body ideals. Second, we’ve been updating all of our workout gear guides so that if you do need to invest, you’ve got more sustainable options to choose from. Scroll on to discover size-inclusive options, polyester-free ones, and some extra soft clothes, too.

In this week’s issue:
  • Stylish gym gear made from bamboo viscose: soft and breathable clothes from BAM
  • Size-inclusive activewear, up to 6XL
  • Polyester-free workout clothes: avoid one of the industry’s most prolific fibres

If you’re looking to refresh your gym clothes this season then you’ll want to meet BAM, a British brand founded on avoiding virgin polyester in activewear, with a kindness-first ethos and super soft bamboo viscose gear.

“We are founded on the passion to find the best the human spirit has to offer and we’re devoting ourselves to making this happen,” says founder David Gordon. BAM achieved a “Good” score in all three of our ratings pillars—people, the planet, and animals. It traces most of its supply chain, has eliminated hazardous chemicals in most of its supply chain, avoids plastic packaging, and sources most of its bamboo viscose from the two producers that are jointly ranked third on the Canopy Hot Button Report. On top of all that, the brand’s workout clothes are pretty stylish, so you’ll be able to share their sustainability credentials when someone inevitably compliments them.

There’s much to consider when you’re investing in activewear—how it’ll move with your body, and whether it’ll still feel comfortable when you’re halfway through a HIIT session. Throw sustainability and size inclusivity into the mix and it can feel like your options quickly diminish, but these brands, which are making gym clothes in sizes up to 6XL, prove otherwise. Scroll on to meet some of them.
  • Girlfriend Collective (up to 6XL) uses lower-impact, non-toxic dyes and is fully OEKO-TEXÂŽ STANDARD 100 certified. (Pictured above)
  • Tripulse (up to 6XL) is a Swedish brand that uses lower-impact materials like TENCELL Lyocell
  • Purusha People (up to 4XL) makes soft and comfortable activewear that’s ideal for yoga sessions

For the avid gym-goer, yogi, runner, or sportsperson, high quality activewear that is both breathable and moisture-wicking is essential. But unfortunately, many of the most popular activewear brands are still using polyester to achieve those characteristics. But it is possible to avoid the fibre in activewear, as our picks below show. They’re made from durable materials like organic cotton, or TENCEL Lyocell, both of which are breathable and comfortable.
