Back in January, SHEIN was pressured by a UK parliamentary committee to explain its ethics practices—surprise surprise, the ultra fast fashion retailer didn’t meet expectations for its transparency, even refusing to comment on questions about cotton sourcing. Its representative was accused of “wilful ignorance” and being “very unhelpful”.

SHEIN gets our lowest rating of "We Avoid" because our last rating review found zero evidence of environmental initiatives, worker empowerment, or living wage commitments. It also continues to promote overconsumption through low pricing, gamified shopping, and constant product drops.

What can we, as consumers do about all this? The first thing is to opt out of ultra fast fashion and choose alternatives to SHEIN—and there are plenty of brilliant brands to support instead.
