Because if you’re anything like me, you don’t just want the research. You want to know what to do with it.


If you’re more of a reader than a video person, here’s the short version.


As you know, the bacterium we’ve been talking about this week is called Akkermansia muciniphila. It lives close to the mucus layer of your colon and feeds on mucin, which is part of that protective layer.


But Akkermansia doesn’t just laze around there doing nothing. It helps stimulate your gut to produce more of the mucus layer it depends on.


That’s one reason researchers are so interested in it.


Higher levels of Akkermansia have been linked with leanness, healthier blood sugar, and lower inflammation. Lower levels have been linked with the opposite.


The challenge is that many Western adults have low levels of Akkermansia. 


Why? 


Well, age can lower your levels of Akkermansia. So can a round of antibiotics. A long-term diet high in processed foods can affect it too.


That’s why the right kind of fiber matters so much.


In a 2024 peer-reviewed human trial from the University of Minnesota, healthy adults took a specific slow-fermenting fiber for fourteen days.


And Akkermansia levels rose significantly compared with placebo.


In other words, we have real human data showing that a specific fiber can increase Akkermansia levels.
