A TURNING POINT IN WORLD HISTORY

Growing up in Pittsburgh, PA, I remember as a young boy my local newspaper doing a front page article about D-Day. As a young man, I had the honor of drinking beers and listening to the paratroopers who jumped into Normandy as part of the 82nd Airborne Division. Their stories of jumping into the drop zones of Normandy and their legendary exploits solidified my respect and admiration for the greatest generation.

Five times in my life I have been to Normandy, four with GORUCK and every time it’s different. I can run events all over the world and talk of the exploits of young men but standing on the beaches of Normandy with our community and being able to physically describe to folks what exactly happened so many years ago is special.

The two most spiritual experiences I have had with GORUCK occurred on Omaha Beach. These beaches symbolize a turning point in world history. We collectively came together to destroy tyranny in the greatest team event the world has ever seen. We will always come and honor the sacrifices of the men who jumped from airplanes and stormed the beaches of Normandy to ensure a better world for generations to come.

HONOR THEIR SACRIFICE

The English Channel on June 6, 1944, was cold, grey, and unforgiving. Packed inside the Higgins boats, thousands of soldiers weren't thinking about grand strategy or the history books; they were focused on the mission and the absolute necessity of what they were about to do. They knew the stakes of the world rested on their shoulders, and they were willing to face hell for freedom. When the ramps dropped, that resolve was tested instantly. On Omaha Beach, the plans evaporated. Victory came down to individual choices made under devastating machine-gun fire. It came from men who refused to let the line fail, who found a way to blow the wire and climb the bluffs because freedom wasn't an option to be compromised.

History gives us numbers, 10,000 casualties on day one, but the real cost was paid in the futures of young men who never got to grow old. They traded all of their tomorrows so we could have our todays.

When things get tough, when the world feels heavy and your mind wants to quit, you look to the generations that came before you. The comfort we enjoy today was bought on those cliffs, paid for by men who chose to move forward through the impossible. You lace up your boots, face whatever obstacle is in front of you, and live a life worthy of their sacrifice.
