Price of Liberty
Memorial Day was established to give us time to pause, reflect, and remember the true cost of freedom. What began as Decoration Day in the years following the Civil War has grown into a national day of remembrance honoring the men and women who gave their lives in service to this country. The flowers and wreathes placed on the graves of fallen soldiers are a solemn reminder that the freedoms we enjoy were secured through sacrifice, courage, and a deep love of country.
As we approach the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, Memorial Day takes on even greater significance. Nearly two and a half centuries ago, a small band of warrior patriots, businessmen, diplomats, and families who migrated to these shores, put pen to paper and declared that these colonies were free and independent states. This declaration set in motion a struggle that would define a nation. That bold moment in history — rooted in the belief that all people are endowed with the rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness — became the foundation of the American experiment. The freedoms secured in 1776 have been defended and preserved through generations of service members and their families, each carrying forward that original promise. Today, nearly 250 years later, we solemnly remember past sacrifices and greatly appreciate those young men and women who carry on the defense of freedom by serving in America’s armed forces.
Today, Memorial Day weekend also brings families and communities together in a different but meaningful way. It marks the unofficial beginning of summer, when backyards fill with conversation, laughter, and the familiar aroma of food on the grill. While the tone may be lighter, the purpose remains rooted in gratitude. Gathering with family and friends offers a chance to reflect, share stories, and appreciate the blessings of liberty that allow these moments to exist.
As you celebrate this weekend, enjoying family, friends and good food, remember those who came before us. Let us honor and remember the American men and women who gave their lives in service to this nation, securing the freedoms we often enjoy without a second thought. Their sacrifice, and the sacrifice of their families, has carried this country forward for nearly 250 years. With every quiet moment of reflection, shared story, or simple prayer, we keep their memory alive. This Memorial Day, may we come together not only in celebration, but in sincere remembrance of those who made that celebration possible.
