Dating back from 1748, the ceremony centres on the trooping of a regiment's Colour through the ranks, a tradition that once enabled soldiers to recognise their colours on the battlefield. Each year, a different regiment's Colour is trooped during the parade. In 2026, this honour falls to The King's Company, 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards, whose Colour will be carried before His Majesty The King. Bearing the regiment's battle honours and traditions, the Colour remains the centrepiece of the ceremony and gives Trooping the Colour its name.
As Commander-in-Chief, Head of the Armed Forces, His Majesty King Charles III maintains a close relationship with many of Britain's regiments and military organisations, continuing a long tradition of royal service and patronage. The occasion provides an opportunity not only to celebrate the Sovereign's birthday, but also to recognise the dedication, professionalism and commitment of the men and women who serve in the British Armed Forces.
