Dear Friend,

When you work in publishing, you get used to seeing finished books. They arrive with a cover, a title, and an author’s name proudly displayed on the front. By the time readers see them, they look like they came together pretty easily.

But no book starts that way.

Before there’s a finished manuscript, there are usually ideas that change, pages that get rewritten, and plenty of questions about where the book is going. Writers also have conversations with editors and publishers that can help them see the project more clearly.

After 36 years in publishing, I’ve seen how much work goes into a finished book. The writing is where most people begin, but it’s only one part of getting a book published.

You also have to think about what kind of book you’re writing, who it’s for, how to present the idea, and which publishing path might make sense. Later, there are questions about editing, marketing, and reaching readers.

Most writers don’t know all of this when they begin. But learning more about the process can save you time and help you make better decisions about your book.

That’s what Kelly Notaras and I hope to help with when we host the free Hay House Book Writer’s Bootcamp from September 21–24.

Kelly is a bestselling author and editor, and together we’ll talk about the writing and publishing process, answer questions, and help you get a clearer idea of what to do next. The Bootcamp is open to both fiction and nonfiction writers. Follow this link to find out more and register.

You can join us with an idea, a partial draft, or a notebook full of questions. You don’t need to have a finished manuscript or a perfect plan.

A finished book may look very complete, but every book begins with someone trying to figure out what to say and what to do next. If that’s where you are with your book, I hope you’ll join us.

We’ll meet live online each day from 12:00 PM PT / 3:00 PM ET, and the Bootcamp is free to attend.

Have a great week.

Wishing You the Best,
Reid Tracy
