Dear Friend,

Wayne used to say something that has stayed with me over the years:

“You can’t solve a problem with the same mind that created it.”

It sounds simple, but it isn’t always easy to put into practice.

As we get older, we accumulate a lot of experience. We’ve been through challenges, made mistakes, figured out what works, and hopefully learned a few things along the way.

Most of the time, that experience is a huge advantage. But I also think there are times when it can get in our way.

We look at a problem we’re dealing with today and immediately think about what worked the last time we faced something similar. Usually that’s a pretty good place to start.

But sometimes it doesn’t work. And I know I’ve been guilty of responding by basically trying the same thing again, only harder.

I’ve certainly seen this at Hay House over the years.

Publishing has changed a lot during my 38 years here. There have been plenty of times when my first instinct was to rely on something that had worked for us before.

But some of the best things we’ve done came from looking at a problem differently or having someone else come in with an idea I never would have thought of myself.

I was fortunate to talk with Wayne almost every day for many years. Sometimes he was my friend. Sometimes he was my mentor. And sometimes he simply helped me see something from a completely different angle.

I didn’t always agree with him, of course. But even then, he could usually get me thinking about something differently.

I think that’s one of the most valuable things another person can do for us.

When you’ve been thinking about the same problem for a long time, it can become pretty hard to see anything new. Sometimes talking to a friend, mentor, therapist, coach, or just someone who sees the situation differently can help.

They may not have the answer either. But they might ask a question you haven’t considered or point out something that seems obvious to them but somehow wasn’t obvious to you.

I think there’s also a tendency as we get older to trust our own experience more and more. Most of the time, that’s probably a good thing.

But I’m trying to remind myself that experience doesn’t mean I’ve already thought of everything.

So if there’s something you’ve been stuck on lately, maybe it’s worth talking it through with someone who looks at things a little differently than you do.

You certainly don’t have to take their advice. But you never know when one different perspective might help you see something you’ve been missing.

Wayne did that for me many times, and I’m still grateful for it.

Have a great week.

Wishing You the Best,
Reid Tracy
