It all started in Medieval France. 'Denier' was an old French coin, the weight of which was equal to the weight of 9,000 metres of silk yarn. When this yarn was spun together, it formed a 'yarnis'. So if the combined yarn weighed 60g, it was considered to be '60 denier'. These days, tights are made from various fibres, but the term 'denier' has stuck around.
