Winter baby sleep
What should baby wear to sleep tonight?
Cold Australian nights can make a simple bedtime question feel surprisingly complicated. The reassuring part is that you do not need one perfect nursery temperature or a rigid chart for every baby.
Start with the temperature of the room, choose light and breathable layers, and check how your baby feels rather than dressing for the weather outside.
Four winter sleep reminders
  • Dress baby for the room they are sleeping in, not the outdoor forecast.
  • Keep baby’s head and face uncovered for sleep—no beanies, hats or hoods.
  • If you use a sleeping bag, choose one that fits around the neck and armholes, has no hood, and follow the maker’s TOG guide.
  • Stop wrapping as soon as baby shows signs of rolling.
A quick comfort check
Feel your baby’s chest or upper back. If they feel hot, sweaty or clammy, remove a layer and check again. If you are worried that your baby is unwell or cannot maintain a comfortable temperature, seek advice from a health professional.
Practical helpers for cold-weather routines Browse baby gear for bath time, nap time and everyday winter care.
