The secret to getting shampoo bars right

Shampoo bars are one of those things that divide opinion - and usually, it comes down to one bad first experience.

The truth is, shampoo bars work brilliantly. But they do work a little differently to liquid shampoo, and knowing a few simple things upfront makes all the difference. Whether you're trying one for the first time or giving them a second chance, here's all that you need to know.

This is the most important step. Soak your hair completely with warm water before you begin - the wetter your hair, the easier it is to build a good lather.

Hold the bar under running water for a few seconds before use. This softens it slightly and helps activate it.

You can either rub the bar directly onto your scalp in small circular motions, working from the roots down, or rub it between your palms first to build a lather and then apply with your hands. Both work well - the hands-first method tends to suit sensitive scalps.

Once applied, use your fingertips to massage your scalp gently. This helps distribute the product evenly and removes any buildup.

Rinse well with warm water. If you live in a hard water area and find there's a little residue, a final rinse with diluted apple cider vinegar can help balance your hair's pH and leave it feeling clean and soft. 

If your first wash doesn't feel quite right, don't give up. Hair that's used to sulphate-based shampoos can take a couple of washes to adjust to natural ingredients - this is completely normal. Stick with it, and by the third wash most people notice a real difference.

Always let your bar dry between uses - never leave it sitting in water. A soap dish with drainage or a dry shelf away from the shower stream will extend the life of the bar considerably.
