Open with a trigger, tension, and trust. This answers three core basic questions for the prospect:

• Why change?

• Why now?

• Why us?

Here’s an example:

Trigger: I saw that you’re hiring internationally in France and Spain…

Tension: Not sure if you’re running into challenges with compliance and managing multiple systems for payroll…

Trust: ABC CLIENT used our help to remove the complexity getting in the way of expansion plans… Do you have time later this week to learn more? Or do you have a few minutes right now?

The biggest mistake reps make is leading with a pitch disguised as a question.

"Hi, do you have two minutes to hear how we help companies like yours increase revenue?"

That's not a question. It's a trap — one that prospects feel immediately.

The reps only job is to create safety,

State your name, company, and something true and specific about why you're calling this person today. Not a persona. Not an industry trend. A signal.

Specificity disarms. Pitches activate defenses.

Don’t pitch-slap your prospect! Instead, these three steps in your opener will set you up to pitch with a receptive prospect.

Establish two-way dialogue, share credibility, and use a pattern interruption. For example:

“Hi {name}, this is ______. You were not expecting my call; this is actually the first time I've reached you. I was hoping you might help me out for a brief moment.

"I’m calling from {company} and we work with companies like _____, and ____.

“The purpose of my call today is to see if it would make sense to schedule an introductory conversation at another time, when I’m not calling you out of the blue. Do you have some time for a brief intro next week?”
