One last issue to sort out!

Hi everyone,

Progress

In our last update, we mentioned we were waiting to receive final samples of the tinted front panels. Well, they arrived, and they are far, far too dark, which caused a fair amount of panic. To sort this issue out once and for all we quickly created an illuminated test rig, with the exact tint we would like on one side, and a slot for the sample on the other side, making it easy for the factory to compare the two on-site. Thanks to the magic of 3D printing this only took us a day to create, and it has now arrived with the manufacturer, who seems to appreciate the urgency of the situation. This will mean that everything is going to be delayed by a month at least whilst we wait for the new samples to be made and sent to us.

At this point everything else is close to being completed. All the basic components have been at the factory for months, the PCBs are nearly finished, the booklet should be arriving shortly, the ABS parts are being injection moulded, and the acrylic is being laser cut as you read this.

Raspberry Pi Add-on

Just a reminder, we'll be shipping the Raspberry Pi Add-on separately from the rest of the kit. They will be sent from the UK whilst the kit will be shipped from China (again, thanks to the global component shortage). We'll do our best to try and avoid duties to the EU and US but given all the extra costs of the Raspberry Pi 4's and having to ship this separately from the kit we can't make any guarantees.

Ever wondered what 230 Raspberry Pis along with their power supplies looks like?

It’s about 40 kg altogether. It’s pretty fun to see everything in one place, but it’s a shame we won’t get to see all 1000 LumiCube kits before they ship (as we will not be travelling to China, given current circumstances).

Before we send these add-ons we still need to program 230 SD cards, which is a bit of a mission. To do this we’ll be using a 10-way powered USB hub, and 10 USB SD card readers. Along with Raspberry Pi’s clever filesystem expansion mechanism, this should allow us to complete this task in just a day or two, rather than several weeks!

Software packaging and updates

We’ve spent some time simplifying and improving how the LumiCube’s software is installed, and how it is kept up to date. We’re now using AppImage to neatly package up our software, and have added a button to our web based editor, so you will be able to receive any updates with a single click.
