Several Sabbaths during the Jewish year carry special names, usually tied to the season they fall in or to a special reading from the Prophets. There is Shabbat Hagadol, "the Great Shabbat," just before Passover. There is Shabbat Chazon, "the Shabbat of Vision," before the fast of Tisha B'Av, and Shabbat Nachamu, "the Shabbat of Comfort," right after it. This week is Shabbat Shuva, the "Shabbat of Return." It falls in the short window between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, during the period known as the Aseret Yemei Teshuva, the Ten Days of Repentance. Its name comes from the first word of the special reading from the Prophets, the haftarah, read in synagogues that morning.
The Sages teach that the door of teshuva, repentance, is never closed. A person can return to God on any day of the year. Yet they also teach that these ten days are different. The prophet Isaiah urges, "Seek the Lord while He can be found; call on Him while He is near" (Isaiah 55:6), and the Sages explain that this refers to the days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur (Babylonian Talmud, Rosh Hashanah 18a). Maimonides adds that while repentance is always good, during these days it is accepted immediately (Maimonides, Laws of Repentance 2:6). God is close, and He is waiting for us.
But is there a deeper connection between teshuva and Shabbat? Can the day of rest teach us something about changing our lives?
