Words We Cannot Find on Our Own

There is a song that has been stuck in my head all week, and I'm not the only one. A few of us in the office have been singing it on and off since Rosh Hashanah. The song is ""I Will Hope in God."" The prayer is sung to many different melodies in synagogues around the world, but the one I cannot stop humming is by Ishay Ribo, one of Israel's most popular singer-songwriters. It is beautiful and stirring, the kind of tune that lifts you and stays with you long after the prayers have ended.
The words are simple:
I will hope in God, I will plead before Him, I will ask Him for the gift of speech. Among the congregation of the people I will sing of His strength; I will pour out songs about His deeds. To a person belong the plans of the heart, but the answer of the tongue comes from the Lord. Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise.
It is a short prayer, and it is not really a prayer for anything most of us would put on a High Holiday wish list. It does not ask for health, livelihood, or forgiveness. It asks for words. Why would a people standing before the King of the universe, on the days when the Sages say the whole world is judged, spend precious moments asking for the ability to speak?
