The Man Who Refused to Hate

The car that struck eight-year-old Charlotte Herzberg as she rode her bicycle in Monsey, New York, was driven by her father's closest friend and study partner of seven years.

Yudi Herzberg arrived at the scene minutes after the call from his wife and saw two Hatzolah volunteers he knew well working over his daughter. One of them would not meet his eyes. Then he saw the car, and understood.

What happened in the next moments decided everything that followed. Herzberg understood that he was standing at a fork, and that the road grief would carry him down by default ran straight toward blame. He would not take it. This was a test, he concluded, and the only thing God wanted to know was whether a man could lose a child and still refuse to hate.

Before he left for the hospital, he walked over to his friend and embraced him. That night, after doctors told him Charlotte could not be saved, he stopped at the man's house and embraced him again. The two of them still learn Torah together every morning.

Since then, more than 2,600 people have pledged an act of shalom (peace) in Charlotte's memory. Feuds forty years old have ended. Estranged children have knocked on their parents' doors.

We have just come out of Tisha B'Av, which makes the timing of this story hard to ignore.
