About the SS Tilawa

The SS Tilawa, a British-Indian passenger and cargo steamship launched in 1924, served vital trade routes between India, East Africa, and the Far East.

On November 23, 1942, amid World War II, the ship was transporting passengers and cargo from Bombay to Mombasa. Tragically, it was torpedoed by the Japanese submarine I-29 about 1,000 miles east of the Seychelles. Sadly, 280 lives were lost in the attack, while survivors endured harsh conditions before being rescued by Allied ships.

Among the Tilawa's cargo was a significant consignment of 60 tons of silver bars, essential for the wartime economy and intended for minting in British colonies.
