Loraine James calls Detached From The Rest Of You her "IDM popstar album," and the description is both self-deprecating and precisely accurate. Forged during a period of internal struggles around confidence fraying and a desire for change taking shape, it finds her stripping production back to the bone: clicks, glitches, sparse keyboard chords and the negative space between sounds, drawing on Aoki Takamasa, Ryoji Ikeda and the clicks-and-cuts era of early 2000s electronic music. The shift from club-driven sounds into more precise song forms finds her voice pushed higher in the mix than ever before. Lead single 'In A Rut' is a duet with Sydney Spann and sums up the album perfectly.

 

 

 

 

Manchester's Elias Buckley (different from the Back to Basics and Hacienda associated Buckley) has been building a head of steam with tunes across ec2a, Well Street, Dimeshift and S.P.E.C. This four-tracker for Sneaker Social Club is another doozy that opens with brutalist grime mutation, all dislocated bass womps and whip-crack snares. 'M.O.B.S.O.T.' is the centrepiece - a wide, deadly UKG bounce that holds the EP's many angles together with lean, mean authority. 'City Dweller' slows and lets slithering sound design coil around an undulating sub bass throb then 'Gawy' closes by splitting the difference between techno propulsion and soundsystem weight. Red hot, unmistakably UK-centric tackle.

 

 

 

 

United by a deep affinity for sub frequencies, long-going bass stable Judder open a new chapter with their first V/A of a projected series, calling in local faces Coido, Oddkut, Nattah and Naprimer for a wicked foray into all things both danceable and out-there. The spirit of broken beat is strong with this one, as carnivalesque beats and breaks collide on the toothy 'Phase Shift' and 'Komo', high-energy A-siders of choice. A dark garage upswing presides on Nattah's 'Diligence', a rahter tricky tonal shift before Naprimer's 'Carrera' careens towards shocking downtempo paces, the sole rep of a new Bristol-Manchester sonic axis running hot at 100BPM.
