There is something magical about arriving in Kununurra at this time of year. The air is warm but gentle, the boab trees stand proudly against endless blue skies, and the Kimberley landscape glows in deep reds, ochres and golds as the sun begins to set.
Every May, the East Kimberley comes alive for the Ord Valley Muster — a celebration that feels less like a festival and more like an invitation into one of Australia’s most extraordinary regions. From 15–24 May, travellers from across the country make their way north to experience music under the stars, ancient landscapes, storytelling, adventure and the unique energy that only the Kimberley can offer.
Set on Miriwoong and Gajerrabeng Country, the Muster is unlike any city festival. Here, red dirt meets ancient ranges, boab trees silhouette against fiery sunsets, and live music unfolds under vast Kimberley skies. Between headline performances and cultural experiences, visitors can explore waterfalls, cruises, gorges and landscapes that feel almost otherworldly.
At the heart of the festival is the famous Kimberley Moon Experience, the Muster’s signature open-air concert held beneath the stars at Celebrity Tree Park. The 2026 program features Australian music icon Tina Arena alongside acts including Boy & Bear and Budjerah.
But the Ord Valley Muster is far more than a music festival. It is deeply connected to the East Kimberley community and culture. Visitors can experience events such as Corroboree Under the Stars with the Miriwoong Gajerrong people, storytelling, bush food experiences, art showcases and immersive cultural programming that celebrates the rich traditions and creativity of the region.
The journey itself is part of the experience. Flying into Kununurra, you are immediately struck by the vastness of the landscape — winding waterways, rugged ranges, hidden gorges and pockets of brilliant green against the red earth. It feels remote in the best possible way, as though you have stepped into another world entirely.
