What’s in a Cell?

In 1664, English scientist Robert Hooke viewed a thin slice of cork through an early microscope. Cork looked to him as if it were constructed of dozens of tiny rectangular compartments. He called them cells, from the Latin word cella, meaning “small room.” 

Ocean Weather

Anyone who has lived through the 150-mile-per-hour winds and pounding rain of a raging hurricane has a deep respect for the ocean. And probably a healthy fear of it, too. The ocean can be cruel and unsparing. It is where some of the world’s most dramatic weather first takes shape.

Early Years

Thomas Edison was given the same first name as a great uncle, and his middle name, Alva, came from a family friend. As a child, he was called Al. He was called other things, too. There’s a famous story that one teacher called him “addled” (confused). The teacher didn’t understand that young Al Edison learned by asking questions, not by answering them.

A plane is a flat surface. An inclined plane is a flat surface that slopes, like a ramp. How does it work?Well, “it” doesn’t really do any work. It just stays there while someone moves something on it. That may not seem like much of a machine. But just try to move a piano uphill without one.

Oceanic islands were never linked to a mainland. Some lie far from any continent. Many oceanic islands are formed by underwater volcanoes, while others are formed by coral reefs.
