Invasions
One of the first known Viking raids, or invasions, shocked everyone who heard about it. The raid happened in 793 CE on Lindisfarne, off the east coast of England. The island had a famous monastery (a place for monks or other religious people). Viking warriors looted and destroyed the place.

Tough Inside and Out
Trees have evolved to tower over other plants. To get so big, they need some special features. Unlike small plants with flexible stems, trees are “woody.” As a tree grows from a seedling into a sapling, it develops a trunk and branches with stiff, woody cells at the center.

The Amazon Basin
The world’s largest watershed (by far) is the Amazon Basin, which covers over 2.6 million square miles (40 percent of South America) and funnels water from over a thousand tributaries in eight countries. It all flows into the mighty 4,000-mile-long Amazon River, which has a phenomenally powerful flow.

Fighting Infectious Diseases in Our Time
In 1969, the U.S. Surgeon General declared, “The time has come to close the book on infectious disease.” Like other health experts back then, he thought that vaccines, antibiotics, and other medicines would soon solve the problem of deadly germs.

Growth and Conflict
As you sweep up the back room of your dad’s shop, you hear him talking with some other men. Many people in your little town think of themselves as Americans, even if the Oregon Country isn’t really a state. But some of your father’s customers are British, and they say this town will belong to Britain someday.
