In our household in the summertime, we sometimes enjoy what we call “backwards dinner.” This means we eat ice cream in the late afternoon, then follow it by so-called real food a few hours later.
Because you shouldn't wait for ice cream; you want a cone of Cookies and Cream from the snack bar at the beach, a chipwich from the ice cream truck the minute you hear the jingle, a paleta from the pushcart at the playground when you are supervising endless hours of “Hey Mom, watch this,” even if it isn’t time for dessert.
Now, frozen desserts aren’t technically baking, but they are, technically, all the “baking” I feel like doing right now. I want to grill hot dogs and then serve this refreshing swirled Mango Float Ice Cream Cake. I want to hand my kids a Strawberry Ice Cream Sandwich, made with no-churn strawberry ice cream (no ice cream maker required!) smashed between two cinnamon-scented oatmeal cookies. I want to spoil my supper with a bowl of Mocha Madness Ice Cream, and I want to end at least one of those I-wish-it-would-never-end summer evenings by torching a Baked Alaska to the delight of my guests.
Like those ’90s bumper stickers proclaimed: Life is uncertain, eat (frozen) dessert first.
Save me a scoop,

DON’T MAKE YOUR PIZZA AT HOME WITHOUT THIS |
If pizza is all about the crust — and it’s our position that the quality of the crust is what differentiates a bad pizza from a good one — then getting the crust to the right color and crispness is a pizza baker’s highest priority. That’s where pizza steels and stones come in. |
