A space engineer who brought us images of Mars confronts Earth's brutal realities in Gaza

Engineer Loay Elbasyouni was integral to NASA's 2020 mission to Mars. He helped design the lightweight robotic helicopter, dubbed "Ingenuity," that made history when it took to the skies above Mars and recorded stunning views of the Red Planet's rocky terrain.

Elbasyouni's parents were visiting their hometown in northeast Gaza when Israel's counteroffensive began. They remain trapped, as food, water and fuel grow scarce.

With Ingenuity, Elbasyouni triumphed over Mars, 293 million miles away. And yet somehow, back in Gaza, the 20-mile distance that would deliver his parents from the ravages of war to the promise of refuge seems far more remote.
