Breaking News: Millions of sterile fruit flies are being dropped on L.A. to fight an infestation

After the discovery of three invasive Mediterranean fruit flies in Leimert Park, agriculture officials have rolled out a quarantine order covering 88 square miles of Los Angeles County and will drop millions of sterile male flies from the sky to disrupt the insects' life cycle.

The quarantine covers produce from commercial growers, wholesalers and retailers in the area. Each week, over a quarter-million flies will be airdropped per square mile around where the insects were found.
